Kaitlin Olson has built a brilliant career as one of television’s sharpest comedic voices. Best known as the unforgettable Sweet Dee on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and more recently as Morgan Gillory on High Potential, she brings a mix of chaos, heart, and razor-sharp timing to every role. Behind the fame sits a private but close-knit family, and many fans still wonder about her siblings. Here’s the clear, up-to-date picture.

Who Are Kaitlin Olson Siblings?
Kaitlin has one sibling: an older brother named Joshua Olson. The two grew up together moving between Spokane, Vashon Island, and the Portland area of Oregon. While Kaitlin stepped into the spotlight, Joshua has deliberately stayed out of it. He prefers a quieter life focused on nature and practical work rather than cameras or red carpets.
In 2021, Kaitlin shared a sweet childhood photo of the two of them on Instagram—her in a little floral dress, him standing nearby with a piece of candy and a hat. When a friend asked about their birth years, she joked that they were born “in olden times.” That small glimpse remains one of the few public moments fans have of the pair. During their father’s illness in 2026, Joshua was by the family’s side, showing the quiet support that has always defined their relationship.
A Closer Look at Joshua Olson
Joshua keeps almost no public profile. There are no interviews, social media accounts, or career announcements that surface in entertainment coverage. What is known comes mainly from family context: he shares the same parents, grew up in the same Pacific Northwest settings, and maintains a low-key existence that values privacy.
That choice stands in contrast to his sister’s high-visibility path, yet it seems to suit the family dynamic perfectly. Kaitlin has never treated her brother’s preference for privacy as something to overcome. Instead, the two appear to operate with mutual respect—one thriving in comedy and television, the other choosing a quieter road.
Family Background and Parents
Kaitlin was born Kaitlin Willow Olson on August 18, 1975, in Portland, Oregon. Her father, Donald Lee Olson, worked as a publisher (including a stint at the Portland Tribune) and was known for his joyful sense of humor—the same humor Kaitlin has credited as an early influence. Her mother, Melinda Leora, worked as a nurse and later became CEO of Earth Mama Organics.
The family moved several times during Kaitlin’s childhood before settling on a farm in Tualatin. Those early years on the move and on the land shaped a grounded perspective that still shows in how Kaitlin talks about home and parenting her own two sons with husband Rob McElhenney.

Clearing Up the Olsen Twins Confusion
One of the most common mix-ups online is the idea that Kaitlin is related to Mary-Kate, Ashley, or Elizabeth Olsen. She is not. The surnames sound identical but are spelled differently—Olson versus Olsen—and the families have no connection. The Olsen siblings (six in total) grew up in California; Kaitlin’s roots are firmly in Oregon. The coincidence has fueled years of speculation, but the facts are straightforward and have been confirmed repeatedly.
Conclusion
Kaitlin Olson’s sibling story is simple and refreshingly ordinary for someone so famous. She has one brother, Joshua, who values privacy, and parents who provided a supportive, humor-filled foundation. That combination of closeness and respect for boundaries seems to have given her the freedom to build an extraordinary career without losing sight of what matters at home. In a world that often demands full access to celebrities’ personal lives, the Olson family offers a quieter model—one that prioritizes real connection over public performance.
